James,
Wonderful your on the list! Your problem probably lies with the email
reader your using. It may not be configured to wrap lines to fit your
window. The mail client people use to send mail and the mail client
people use to read mail plus the servers passing the mail all can have
an effect on the final delivered product you look at. Try seeing if
your mail client has a button to turn on automatic line wrapping. One
major difference between MS based machines and Unix machines is that the
end of a line is defined differently. A linux box uses a single
linefeed while a DOS box uses a carriage return and a linefeed, IIRC.
So, that might be part of the problem. I hope someone more knowleagable
about email can post an answer. Tell what email program you use and try
to see if you can get Mozilla mail or Evolution to work for you on your
Linux machine as well.
The reply about not posting html is because many on the list use command
line mail clients like mutt or pine. They are fast and convenient but
don't do html. So your email will look just about unreadable in those
circumstances. Sometimes html mail will get truncated. Using 8bit
encoding and sending a "plain" text email is the most friendly to list
servers like ALE.org. When sending a friend a attached binary is when
MIME encoding can help. Both standards are good for particular purposes.
Feel free to ask questions about your new Linux box! I know there are
many in your position now, on the learning curve. So let us know how it
goes,
Dow
