[ale] uptime weirdness

Ok, I have this box that has been online and functioning for ~500 days.
It's nice and secure, so I don't suspect any hack etc (crossing fingers).
Three days ago uptime reported 498 days. :)  Today I logged in expecting to
see 501, but all I see is this:

~uptime
  8:55am  up 2 days, 19:06,  1 user,  load average: 0.41, 0.50, 0.54

~cat /proc/uptime
242297.24 36336792.17

I appears that there is some flakiness on older kernels (this one is 2.2.16)
that causes uptime to wrap around (signed integer?).  Does anybody know this
for sure?
