Why not? I run Slack on Laptops. Works well. My baby is a K6 300 with 128Mb 
and a 9Gb HD running Slackware 9.0 with KDE 3.1.2. I've been running 
Slackware on it for it's entire lifespan of 5 years. I get very good 
performance. The key is to build X and KDE, use 2.5.7x or better, and 
ReiserFS. That's the magic for me, although an install right off the CD is 
not that bad. With a Pentium, the build from source would probably not make 
a noticeable difference, but on the K6 you can feel it. With half the RAM, 
I'd probably stick with one of the blackbox derivatives or XFCE. I ran this 
same laptop with 96Mb up until a few months ago and blackbox was about the 
best it could do.
