You don't have to upgrade that often either, it's up to you.  I do check 
for security updates on a daily basis, but some say I'm paranoid (who 
they are I don't know, but I know they're out there), but I don't 
upgrade but once a week or so.  You can certainly ignore the upgrade 
icon and upgrade at a pace that you're comfortable with.

I'd rather them tell me every hour that I need an upgrade and be able to 
ignore it, then to have them tell me once a month and 12 days before 
they tell me I'm hacked or trash some data because of a bug...

The big difference between M$ upgrades and OS upgrades is that, in 
general, the bugs/exploits are found by folks outside of M$ in both cases.
