In KDE you just set the desktop configuration to "allow applications desktop
window", and run your screensaver with the --root option.
In Gnome, I think all you have to do is run the screensaver with the --root
option (but I've not been running the latest version of Gnome to know for
sure- with earlier versions this was true).
I don't think I've ever tried it in Enlightenment, but it would stand to
reason that if the WM allows eterm to run in the root window, it would allow
a screensaver.
In Blackbox, FVWM, and OpenLook, all you have to do is run the screensaver
with the --root option as well.
I'm running the KDE version of the matrix on my desktop right now...
