Well, I know you can run screensavers in the root window- by just giving the 
-root option after the screensaver is called.  Sometimes it's cool to have 
moving wallpaper... heh.

I know you can also set x-view to display in the root window the same way, 
i.e. xview (file) -root.

Anything beyond this is beyond my experience... :-)
