[ale] Cable Cutting Off

I have this annoying program with my system cutting off my cable modem when I
go into GAIM or XChat..  This is usually remedied by resetting the cable modem
and signing onto GAIM or XChat again..  Is there a way to decapitate this glitch?

System:
Debian/Woody
Linux version 2.4.19-x1
GAIM: version 0.3p3
XChat: 1.8.9
Modem: SB4200 SURFboard
