Sorry, brain fart.  I've been playing with vmware of late and kinda had 
that in the back of my brain....

Getting back to the original problem, having a floppy drive, zip or 
other removable media is a sure solution for file transfer between ntfs 
and Linux.  Requires a bit of sneaker net action and a reboot, but you 
get what you need.
