Are you sure that (a) you've really set your ESSID to something
distinctive, and (b) that you've really told your laptop to
connect to that ESSID? If you do an "iwconfig" on your
wireless interface, what do you see?

I had this exact same problem, and changing the ESSID to
something "interesting" fixed me right up.
