Maybe I can help with this particular problem.

This is what solved the problem for me:

Add the line that follows to this file:
/etc/modules.conf

options ide-cd dma=1

and then REBOOT.  The modules.conf file is read very early
in the boot process so logging out and back in won't help.

I was trying to play dvd movies and they would only jerk
along, dropping frames and audio like crazy as dma was set
dma=0.  The usual command line command wouldn't reset it to
dma=1.  The fix above did the trick.
