[ale] OT: digital recorder/camera recommendation?

John, I've got a Sony DCRTRV730. It does stills as well as mjpeg and
digital video. It cost me around $1k about a year or so ago. It takes
the Sony memorystick. It has both usb and firewire. I've successfully
mounted the memorystick via usb and it works flawlessly. I've not tried
firewire stuff yet.

Down side is that the mjpeg is limited to 60 seconds at 160x112 and 15
seconds at 320x240. Drew and I spent a week one day trying to figure
out why. Turns out, that translates to a file about 1.4 meg, thus we
figured they wanted to limit it to what would fit on a standard floppy.
Idiots. :( Couldn't get anyone at Sony to give us a reasonable answer
for the limitation.

Anyway, it takes decent stills, although not the pixel rate you'd want
to try and print out on photo paper. (1meg pixel) You get two size
options on the stills, the largest being 1152x864. Three resolution
modes which are referred to as standard, fine and super fine. If you're
considering such a purchase, I'd be glad to post some images I've
snapped on a web site so you can download them and see how they print.

It's got all kinds of other bells and whistles which would take too much
to note here. I can forward you the pdf manual if you've got further
interest, let me know.

The latest, most widespread virus? Microsoft end user agreement.
Think about it...
