I have found Gaim (the gnome aim client) easy to set up and use.
I know almost nothing about internet messaging, but Gaim easily
meets my limited needs: it can handle multiple conversations,
change type sizes, adjust the beeps and gongs to suit, etc.
I have no idea if it can handle chat rooms as I have never been
tempted to enter one. <grin> I believe (but am not certain) that
it can contact accounts not only on aol but also on MS's competing
product.
