thanks for the tip. As it turned out, I have a hub which is the root of the problem. Plugging the box directly to the wall resulted in a successful SEARCH.

Looks like the module is already loaded. Try lsmod to verify. Then
"rmmod 3c59x". Then you can load it again with the new options.
