	        	    THIS MONTH:

Topic: Linux applications to replace Windows
			applications

		Presenter: Greg Canter

Greg Canter will lead a discussion of replacing Windows on the
everyday user's desktop. Greg will cover his journey that began
nearly a year and a half ago when he decided to replace Windows
on his desktop with the Linux equivalents. From first deciding
what is needed through choosing among the many options that are
present in the Linux community, to finally going without Windows
products, Greg will present the steps he took to wean himself
off of "The Redmond Distro" to some of the broader facets of his
decision and how it affected his outlook on computing and his
	job as a programmer.

Emphasis will be on making decisions based on "the best tool for
the job" and understanding the whys of conversion as many
efforts fail because of a lack of understanding for the basis of
decisions. A thorough "laundry list" of Linux replacement
programs as well as a coverage of the various Linux
distributions will also be presented, though the discussion will
focus on enabling people to make their own decisions rather than
push a single distro or single solution. Greg will present the
reasoning behind his choices and the various advantages as well
as the disadvantages of those choices - and with the added
	benefit of hindsight.

Greg Canter is a programmer in the Kennesaw area who has been
using Linux/OpenBSD for the past year and a half. He has been
programming in the Atlanta area for the last 6 years. He is a
firm believer in Open Source and considers himself extremely
lucky to finally be doing professionally what was once "just a
	fun hobby".

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
