[ale] Wardriving (was: WML)

I toyed with the idea of setting up a nocat AP myself  (http://nocat.net/) but while I was unemployed the expense was to great.

Nocat is creating an authentication piece for free networks.

I'm actually quite fond of the card I have now which is the 3com with XJack antenna.  I've watched a network admin or two solder antennas back on to to many PC cards, So i love that I'm not ever gonna break this one off.

I think the Orinoco Gold cards are the way to go for pure functionality.  They have both the built in antenna and the jack for an external.  Cheap too if you shop around.  I'm about to buy one for 50 some odd from pricewatch.

I was unaware of any free networks here in town so I appreciate the URL, I'll definitely check it out.

I'll report back when I get my new toys up and running.

Some of the earlier WiFi cards had very limited outdoor ranges, but the
newer ones are somewhat improved, esp. if you drop down the listening
frequency. I just bought a Linksys WPC-11 PCMCIA card for $50 (after rebate)
and I'm going to use it as soon as I find a copy of Slackware or Debian
(since Red Hat doesn't compile the experimental-grade kernel module that I
need for it).

www.AtlantaFreenet.org is run by a guy that has a public-access WAP
(wireless access point, as opposed to Wireless Application Protocol per
the previous discussion) right near the NE I-85/I-285 intersection (fondly
known as "Spaghetti junction"). His site also has an interactive map of
other active or planned WAPs, public or otherwise.
