[ale] Recovery Services

This is just a stab, but sometimes you can recover a lot by making the drive a 
slave on a Linux box and mounting it from Linux. If the circuits aren't 
fried, Linux won't mind that the system files are destroyed.  What kind of 
failures did he have?
