Thanks for the response. I don't really share your disdain for all that is MS, but I do find the above attitudes *very* annoying, especially in an academic environment. I know that people like to "go with what they know", but you can still learn from others. IMHO, the *best* teachers learn from their students. If the professor was pro-microsoft because that's what he knows, it doesn't mean that he shouldn't entertain the alternate problem solutions.

However, I think that this really addresses a fundamental problem with undergraduate education. You're not really there to learn. You are there fulfill requirements to get a diploma. Punch your ticket and move along the diploma mill. (Hey, I don't like it, but it is a fact).

But, I digress.

Many people here seem to take me as a Microsoft Apologist. I'm not - I'm a "best tool for the job" kinda guy. I've used Linux to great advantage on a couple of internal projects where I work. There were places where the work could be done better, faster, and cheaper than using anything else. I also have no aversion to using Microsoft products, and I really, really enjoy programming in C#. In fact, it is the first time in a long time that I've enjoyed programming again.

Respectfully,

Jerry Dennany

Sorry for the delay...was at lunch.

I don't have a problem with any development environment. I can code in
C++ and VB equally, so that's not a concern. I always look at the
project, then determine what will be the best solution.

I dislike M$ just on principle, and as such their products. I try to
avoid using them any more than I need to, except for what I need to
learn for my job.

What really annoyed me was this professor (at Macon State College, BTW)
so happily preaching the M$ gospel. This is not an isolated incident at
MSC. For most of the courses taught, they have a 100% M$ push. In one
class, the professor asked about a hypothetical network deployment. The
"correct" answer was "deploy x M$ servers", regardless of technical
merit. Thus, I got many of his projects "wrong" by suggesting Linux,
until I figured out his bent and did what he wanted.

This doesn't really affect the majority of the people on the list, but I
figured the list as a whole wouldn't mind letting me vent...at the least
they would ignore my thread.

Thanks to all

Jonathan
