[ale] Bizarre sound problem... anyone know?

I believe the newer kernels may have some kernel parameters that would 
allow you to assign so much realtime CPU cycles to a process.  That is a 
complex change to implement without a lot of reading, but that is the 
type of problem the code is designed for.  The DVD is fine, your DMA has 
been checked since you say you've got it enabled and it reads fine under 
the older boot drive.  You could switch to a different DMA mode for the 
DVD.  I had to do that under SuSE 8.0 when using Xine to play a movie. 
 That was for improving the video, not the sound.  You might check to 
see what module parameters are configuring your Shark card compared to 
the old boot drive.
