Remember the deal with the Smartmedia Card getting read on Linux?
Well, thanks to Calvin H. the problem has been resolved. After running a
series of tests, he found that the only problem that I was having was the one
I forgot to mention: Specifying the filesystem type as "msdos" when mounting.
It seems as though I really "lack" when it comes to Linux. Can anyone
recommend a book that would gets into the more esoteric details of Linux. I
have read a Unix admin book that helped a lot. I need to upgrade my
knowledge. If I run into a similar (easier) problem tomorrow, I will fail
again. Should I try installing something everyday? Should I build Linux from
scratch?
After we got it to work on one computer, I put it on the computer that has
Samba so that I could see the pics in Windows. I knew that life was back to
normal when I tried to use Windows (partly because I don't have NFS setup,
AND the computer with the photos is running level 3).
1. First, it noticed that the printer across the room was not available
(because it's hosting computer was shut down).
2. Then, it asked me if I wanted to remember this missing printer the next
time I boot up.
3. I made the mistake of saying "yes"
4. The computer didn't make it into Windows and gave a black screen.
5. I used the "3 finger" about 30 times to reboot but I got in Windows.
6. I noticed that Win was not winning (Explorer ceased to work).
7. I used "3 finger" until it rebooted.
After using Windows and Linux for the last couple of days I have learned
something important. Of the machines that I have, the most stable and
"working" computer is the fully installed and updated RedHat 7.2(s). How long
will RedHat continue to update 7.2? Should I get away from RedHat (and move
to Gentoo for awhile)? Spend a few months on level 3 only?
