[ale] drawing gauges

I'm poking into dark recesses of my brain for this one but I can only 
come up with one thing:  ads I have seen in perhaps /Scientific 
American/ or IEEE's magazine for some software - maybe a graphics 
library - that produced various meters and gauges.  I wish I remembered 
more than that, but I can't.  You might want to search Google Groups to 
find groups where MATLAB or Mathematica are discussed.
