[ale] OT: How fast is your connection, and how much do you pay?

I had the same issue with my Charter cable modem. I found out from the
tech that came out that they were upgrading their network and that and
added "benefit" was that the old modems weren't working. I had an old
"COM" ?? modem that had a static IP address and my new one uses a
dynamic address.

I have also learned from experience not to count on service on weekend
nights. It always seems to slow down or go out.

I am paying $40/month for CharterComm cable ($30 for service
and $10 for
modem rental).  I get 65-95 kbps downstream at night, 35-50
kbps during the
day.  Upstream sucks.  It used to randomly drop every few
hours, then one
weekend it got really slow, followed by ten days of
downtime.  They finally
brought me a new modem and it hasn't dropped me since.
