yes I did, tried everything I can think off and find on the www.
I managed to compile kernel about 99 this way, just from 100th
its in an infinite loop.

Did you make-kpkg clean? Like this:
<stolen code>
cd /usr/src, untar the source, link linux to kernel-source-xxx,
cd /usr/src/linux
make-kpkg --revision=custom.X clean;
make menuconfig;
make-kpkg --revision=custom.X kernel_image
dpkg -i ../kernel-image-xxx.custom.X.deb
</stolen code>
Also check #debian at irc.openprojects.org - sid is .... a challenge.

Hi all,
I am on debian unstable. Needed to recompile the kernel, so I decided to
grab the latest - 2.4.18
this thing just will not boot, first samba mounts, ten usb subsystem
will
hang the pc.
So I reverted back to recompiling 2.4.17 now here is where the problem
is.
make-kpkg kernel-image
is in an infinite loop, I see it do config, compile, and then again
config,
compile ... repeat.
reinstalled kernel-package, kernel source, searched the www, nothing
seems
to help.
any clues?
