It's going to be worse than that to write to a CD-R because you have to
build the ISO filesystem. Look at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO-3.html#ss3.1
and scroll down a bit to see where they talk about piping the output of
mkisofs into cdrecord if your machine can take it.
