Below is the response from an inquiry from another staff member here at
Cornell. GOOD news!!
Fred
Thank you for your interest in StarOffice 6.0 Office Suite. This
full-function office productivity suite includes word processor,
spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, and database applications to
provide a feature-rich software product. In response to your interest,
this letter is to inform you of the channels available to you to obtain
StarOffice for your personal use or the use of your institution.
Academic and research institutions, including Primary and Secondary
schools (K-12), 2- and 4-year Colleges, and Universities, are eligible*
for a no-cost site license of StarOffice 6.0. This institutional
license is available for the cost of media only - no other licensing
fees apply. The StarOffice licensing agreement gives educational
institutions the right to unlimited internal use of the software.
"Internal use" means that participating institutions may make the
software available to enrolled students, faculty, staff and researchers
via computers that institutions own, operate, or maintain direct
control over. We are working on modifications to the license which will
allow institutions to make copies of the software and provide downloads
for distribution to constituents for personal use as well. Details on
this program will be posted on the Sun Education Website in July.
StarOffice for the Individual If you are an individual user(student,
staff, faculty member or researcher) who would like to obtain a
personal copy of StarOffice, you may purchase StarOffice
through retail, online, or through Sun's download center at the
prevailing commercial prices Please see the following site for further
details about personal procurement of StarOffice:
http://wwws.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0/get/index.html
If your institution is taking part in our no-cost license program, you
are also eligible to access StarOffice through the campus networks.
See your campus computer lab managers to find out if your institution
is participating in the Sun program, and if not, direct them to the Sun
website for details.
Institutional Site Licenses
In order to obtain StarOffice 6.0 institutional site licenses, education
institutions will first need to procure the appropriate Media and
Documentation kits. Each Media Kit includes five (5) identical CDs
allowing institutions to utilize them in multiple departments across
campus. Media and Documentation kits come in ten individual languages
so that institutions may select from: English, Spanish, German, French,
Dutch, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and
Japanese. Each CD includes Linux, Windows, and Solaris (SPARC and
Intel) Operating Systems. Media kits are available for purchase now.
A complete list of Media and Documentation kit part numbers and
prices can be found at our two order sites:
Institutional Purchase Orders:

ss.html.
Institutional Credit Card Orders (or personal Credit Cards to be
reimbursed by Institution):

Registering the Institutional Site License
Although education institutions will only need one copy of the media for
installation purposes, we strongly recommend the purchase one media kit
per department as a matter of convenience. Once the Media and
Documentation kits have been ordered and received, the institution must
be registered with Sun. The Site License that is received via
registration will cover the entire campus.
Registration has no cost, but until the institution is registered, it
will not be licensed for wide-spread use of StarOffice 6.0. Visit our
registration site at
http://www.sun.com/edu/promotions/scholar/starofficelicense.html in
order to register and obtain the institutional site license. After
completing the registration, print out a copy of the license statement
which gives your institution the right to use the software for
unlimited internal use and put it in a safe place; this is replacement
license that is specific to education and that covers unlimited
institution-owned machines across the entire campus.
Institutional Technical Support
We anticipate that you'll have extensive adoption and usage of
StarOffice at your institution. You may want to review our low-cost,
flat-fee support offer. For information on our special Institutional
HelpDesk Technical Support offer, please see:
http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/edu/scholar/staroffice_support.html
Thank you again for your interest in StarOffice. If you have further
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Michelle Chang

Until later: Geoffrey esoteric at 3times25.net
I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
