[ale] hard drive won't mount

look familiar?

at first i was blaming mandrake(still do a lil) then i realized that it was 
all 2.4 related.  this has never been a problem on debian potato/sid.
if the drive was failing it sure is taking it's time.  i fail to see why i 
should replace a drive that has not caused any trouble since switching back 
to a 2.2 kernel.
