[ale] apache won't parse shtml files...

hey all...
i've run into a little problem. for some reason my apache configuration
got a little screwed up when i was updating my debian system. i fixed
it back the way it was (at least i think i did) but i found out that my 
shtml files were not being parsed (ie: the server-side includes weren't
being processed any more). does anyone know why this would be?
i'm running debian unstable which has apache 1.3.x. i've followed the
instructions on the apache site to the letter and still no dice.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
