[ale] PPPOE (Bellsouth)

I've had this problem with Telocity DSL. It appeared that I would run pump
and after some time it was possible for the address to disappear. I would
kill pump then execute it again. I would get an adress back. I just added
the IP settings in the network config files. But, I have static IP. You
do not.

My message to everyone on this list.
DO NOT settle for pppoe
DO NOT settle for dynamic IP's

I'm trying to get Bellsouth FastAccess DSL up an running.

I have a Debian system with the Roaring Penguin pppoe client. I have an
ethernet based ADSL modem.

It appears to me (and I've found it say this in at least one place, you
need to have an "IP-less" ethernet connetion going first).

I do "ifconfig eth1" and it responds:
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:B0:00:B2:43
          inet addr:24.53.117.149 Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:6260378 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:2730933 errors:1497 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1497
          collisions:11140 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:11 Base address:0xf8e0

But if I do an "ifconfig" immediately after that, eth1 is listed. If I
do one 3 seconds later, it's gone.

I *think* this may be contrinbuting to my problems getting DSL up.

Any ideas?
