[ale] mysqladmin on debian

Hi,

I'm just teaching myself mysql; I need to put together a small
database that can be printed out and hopefully served up on the
web.

I read in the docs that permissions aren't set initially.
However, when I try to use grant or mysql -u mysql password
'newpassword'
 
 I get an error:

 [dsj at sylvester dsj]$ mysqladmin -u root password newpass
 mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
 error: 'Access denied for user: 'root at localhost' (Using
 password: NO)'


Q. Why can't root execute mysqladmin to change the root account's
password?

Q. What account should you use to log into mysql with to do admin
stuff?

Q. I also get errors about "anonymous users" not being permitted
to do stuff.  However, I log in with mysql -u root or -u admin or
-u dsj or something; I still can't effect any admin changes.

I've read the docs; I'm not sure I've understood them.  (There
are lots and lots.)  But I followed the instructions for
"forgotten passwords" and reading about privileges.  

I could really use some help.
