[ale] 3Com905B/C solution?

How can I guarantee to make a 3Com905B/C network card work? The
interface is built in to the Dell motherboard. I have tried several of
the Vortex 3Com59x/90x driver's options when loading the module, but to
no avail. Searching the list servs has yielded different possible
solutions but no guaranteed solution. The cards show up as available
recognized hardware and can be configured but no packets are received.
In some cases the cards show transmission packets under ifconfig but
never Rx packets. In other cases the cards immediately work and no
problems are encountered. So far, if they don't work, I can never get
them to work.

Do I need to download a DOS based 3Com driver config program and turn
off/on pluginplay? Is that the key? This is one step I have not tried,
nor have I gotten Becker's MII diagnostic program either. I just want a
guaranteed way to configure the cards. Maybe a BIOS upgrade would be in
order too?

The machines vary from no name PCs to Dells but all have either a 3Com
590 or 905 ethernet card as a separate physical card or as an integrated
option. The OS I am using is SuSE 7.3 and the Vortex driver is from
June 2001.
