[ale] PPPOE vs TCPIP

It will have little effect on you. I have set up many people using
roaring penguin pppoe on earthlink and at works just fine. It does take
a bit of overhead, but it is negligable. 

Many ISP's do it because it benefits them to require a login process.
That way, if you change hardware on your end, it won't require that they
do anything.
