[ale] X weirdness (was RE: [ale] X looks pixelated (xfs *is* running))

Looking at the output from X, I'm getting some strange
messages.  I dropped back to 3.3.6 but still have the
same probs.  Can anyone decipher this?

It looks as though the 800X600 mode is invalid for
some reason, and 640X480 is set to default.  Might
this account for the ugliness?  Maybe some confusion
between 640X480 and 800X600 modes?
