I think we all have had good and bad hard drives.  I think your 3 best are 
IBM, WD, and Maxtor.  This doesn't mean that you won't have problems but I 
think you will be OK with a WD.  I had problems 5 years ago with WD but I 
have heard from others that they work great.  I think a hard drives life 
has alot to do with it's surroundings.  Not too many hard drives will hold 
up in a 100 degree(fahrenheit) room with alot of dust...

If you decide to use a Maxtor drive, I have a process that you will need to 
perform to get it working in Redhat 7.2(if you are using a UDMA 100 
controller)
