Maybe you can look into SDL at www.libsdl.net. It's a game programming framework that supports multiple platforms. I'm using it for a project that I'm working on right now. It's really easy to use. I think I must be run in X though, but it isolates you from X programming. The are quite a few tutorials, libraries, applications, and sample code to look through.
