The SMTP server at mx01.alltel.net is rejecting your message because
the envelope is addressed from bruce at toybox.alltel.net and the domain
name toybox.alltel.net does not exist. I presume you have named your
box 'toybox.alltel.net', which is not a real name in alltel.net's DNS
records.
I don't believe the 'mail' program makes any effort to designate the
'from' address in either the headers or the envelope. It simply
passes the message on to sendmail, and expects sendmail to figure out
the 'from' address. Unless told differently, sendmail will create
the 'from' address using the user's login name and the host's fully
qualified domain name.
A solution kind of depends on one's particular e-mail/domain
situation. One possibility might be to set up a genericstable
database which sendmail could use to translate local user names to
valid 'from' e-mail addresses.
