[ale] ext3 errors

I installed a new (used) harddrive yesterday on our
ftp server. To install, I fdisked it to type 83 and
the ran mke2fs -j on it.
Worked fine yesterday, but today I'm getting errors
like the ones at the end of the email when trying to
cd or ls. Do these indicate a bad drive, or do I need
to repair it in some way? I've tried unmounting it
and running e2fsck on it, but I get "Attempt to read
block from filesystem resulted in short read while
trying to open /dev/hdb1. Could this be a zero length
partition?". Hmmm...just tried to mount it, and now
it's asking for a filesystem type. It seems I've just
witnessed the death of a filesystem ;-)...
Thanks for the help. - John
