Andy,
Here are some sites for finding a motherboard manufacturer via its BIOS string
Wim's BIOS
http://www.wimsbios.com/
Identifying your Motherboard with the BIOS
http://www.prosystech.com/hohweb/bios.htm
Another way of tracking down a manufacturer is by using their FCC ID
number. You can search the FCC ID data base at:
http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/
These sites have info on motherboard manufacturers and associated
technology such as BIOS and BIOS upgrades:
http://www.motherboards.org
Motherboard Manuals
http://www.prosystech.com/hohweb/manuals.htm
Motherboard Manufacturers WWW Addresses
http://www.prosystech.com/hohweb/mboard.htm
Dick Perron's motherboard WEB list
http://webpages.charter.net/dperr/mb_mfgs.htm
You can get third party BIOS upgrades from these sites:
Microid Research (MR. BIOS)
http://www.mrbios.com/
Micro Firmware
http://www.firmware.com/
If you want to know what all those BIOS settings do see:
The BIOS Survival Guide
http://burks.bton.ac.uk/burks/pcinfo/hardware/bios_sg/bios_sg.htm
Also Tom's Hardware Guide has a good write up on BIOS settings at:
The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)
