[ale] More problems with Mandrake 8.2

I did a fresh install of Mandrake 8.2 on my desktop because the first one
was really dodgy. This time I installed KDE and Configuration in the "big"
package selection, and did not remove anything during the individual package
selection. (I don't think I removed anything last time, but this time I
made sure.)
Computer boots fine. Sound doesn't work, but I expected that. KDE works
fine, until I try to shut it down. It hangs forever. CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.
Now KDE doesn't start right. It hangs on "Initializing Peripherals" for a
while, then the startup spalsh screen goes away and the panel appears, but I
have no desktop. I try to open a terminal. The window appears but it
remains a black screen. I try to close it. It won't close. XKill. Try to
exit KDE. CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE. Try to su so I can reboot the machine.
Hangs after typing the password. CTRL-ALT-DELETE. At least that gets
trapped properly and the machine shuts down gracefully.
My conclusion is that Mandrake 8.2 is a disaster. I know some of you have
had success with it, I know at least two of you has not, and I have tried
three installs on two different machines now with entirely different but
equally unusable results. Mandrake 8.1 has always been rock solid and I
have never had problems installing or using it. What they released as 8.2
was a bad snapshot of a beta test still in progress. Publisher deadlines
suck. The betas I tried were better than the final. I just hope this isn't
the version that ends up in the 8.2 box, or MandrakeSoft is going to be
hurting.
