[ale] GNOME hogs /dev/dsp

I finally got around to rebuilding my kernel so I have sound. (I have a
ISA AWE64 and have never had any luck with ALSA, I gotta use the OSS
module and build it into the kernel.) If I click the play button in
XMMS and there has been a GNOME system sound in the last ~30 seconds, it
complains about /dev/dsp not being available.
Any idea how to control how long ESD holds onto /dev/dsp?
