I'd use a floppy based distro to boot up and do some exploratory research on
your hd.  Also, of course, try swapping out with another hd before
concluding that the mb is the culprit...

I just loaded RH 7.2 on a temporary machine.  It appears that after I
learned iptables
and forgot ipchains that this default install uses ipchains.  How can I
convert to
iptables?

I do not use X on my firewall.  It appears that console based linuxconf is
not installeds.
Has it been depreciated?
