Doable, yes. Easy, pretty much.

Power down, install new drive, leave old drive in, reboot to old linux.

fdisk new drive to make new partions as desired. Mount the new / onto
/mnt/temproot

cp -Rx /* /mnt/temproot/

This copies everything on the old / filesystem onto the new drive.

repeat for /usr /mnt/tempusr

edit /etc/lilo.conf to point to the new root partition:

boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
default=main

disk=/dev/sda <- This is force using scsi drive 0 for boot
        bios=0x80
disk=/dev/hda
        bios=0x81
disk=/dev/hdb
        bios=0x82
disk=/dev/sdb
        bios=0x83

image=/boot/kernel-2.4.5-xfs-1.0.1
        label=test
        read-only
        root=/dev/sda6 <- THIS MUST BE CORRECT OR NO BOOT!!

Take a deep breath, double check you have a copy of tom's root/boot disk
that works, then <ctl><alt><del>!
