I figured this one out on my own. I have a somewhat unusual setup.
Cable modem <--> Linksys router <--> 802-11b access point <-~->
802-11b/Ethernet converter <--> NIC in LInux based Internet appliance.
Occasionally (about once a month) I can't get on the net. If I reset
the power on each device, starting with the cable modem and working
down to the appliance (which I don't actually power down, just reset
the networking, I can almost always get connected. I'd say that solve
80% of my problem. Sometimes I have to wait an hour or two and try it
again.
I'd say it is reasonable advice. It may not work in your case, but it
does work for some people most of the time.
