If I reply to the group the qmail on the ale list handler is bouncing it
back to me. This has occurred since the change over.

There are two compilers shipping with RH 7.1, gcc and kgcc. The kernel
sources shipping with RH7.1 are set to use kgcc, "kernel" gcc.=20

There was an upgrade for gcc from RedHat that made the gcc
"kernel-compatible". It's still a 2.96, but it has been patched to build
the kernel properly.

If you get the sources for a new kernel from kernel.org, or anywhere but
an official redhat rpm, edit the makefile to call kgcc instead of gcc
unless you are running gcc-2.96.85 or higher. That is an OK kernel
builder.

I've had no success building a kernel with gcc-3.0. Too many "depricated
use" errors to finish.
