[ale] SCSI boot question

I just installed Slackware v8.0 on a system with an Adaptec 2940 SCSI
controller. The Slackware default is to load kernel version 2.2.19.
The SCSI disk (/dev/sda) has two partitions. /dev/sda1 is type 83 and
bootable, /dev/sda2 is type 82.
Slackware 8.0 loaded just fine onto the SCSI HD, and booted just fine.
I then compiled version 2.4.5 kernel that also comes with Slakware 8.0,
and now get the following error on bootup:
VFS: Cannot open root device "801" or 08:01
Please append a correct "root" boot optionb
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mout root fs on 08:01
My lilo.conf file correctly points towards /dev/sda1 for both the choice
to boot kernel 2.2.19 and kernel 2.4.5. When I chose kernel 2.2.19 from
lilo at bootup, all works well. Chosing 2.4.5 or version 2.4.10 (which
I tried as well) gives me the same error as shown above.
Any hints?
