[ale] SuSE 7.2 login screen incomplete, unable login

At the boot prompt type 'single' after kernel name, such as 'linux single'. I
beleive you will have to remount root as rw. You can run e2fsck to check for
and, hopefully, repair faults. You can also reload corrupted files from backup
or original sources.
