He's noted he only needs 6 wire (3 pair) so I suspect he's not using it
for ethernet.

On the other hand, I've found the issue of properly wrapped wire to be a
bit inaccurate.  I've used cabling that is not 'properly wrapped' with
100baseT cards and not had problems.   This included home made cable
that I had made before I knew about the wrapping issue as well as flat
non cat5 cables and cat3 cables.

Anyway, I would recommend following the proper wiring sequence anyway,
but in a pinch, I'd use what I've got, and then make the proper cable
later...
