One interesting note with a SCSI Phillips CDD3600, it appears that it will
still write perfectly nice CDRs as long as it's a "proper" media type.
The 3600 loves to write CDRs if they're the older greenish-blueish media
but more often, the new media comes as a more gold-ish color. When the
newer media is used, the drive writes but fails the fixation with a SCSI
error (drive not ready). Use the darker color media, works error-free.
In my case, it's kernel-independent- everything from 2.0.36 to 2.4.9. Go
figure. I wonder if there's a firware upgrade for the 3600?
