I have gone through all the trials and tribulations of securing my
machine using OpenBSD, IPChains, etc. After spending too much time messing
with it, I went out and bought one of those new router / firewalls. I just
didn't have the time to spend patching my machine once a week plus my
profession really is programmer.(I'm a Network Admin wannabe)
I know these things aren't hacker proof but if you don't know what
you're doing or if you don't have the time to scan the bulletins, you might
want to drop a little dough and get one of these.
Of course, if you want to gain a great bit of knowledge, you can try
Robert Zieglers book "Linux Firewalls". It's a really good read and I was
really impressed by the ipchains rules building tool at his website.(Check
it out at http://www.linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/firewall/index.html)
