[ale] dpkg question

Question;

I want to upgrade an existing application (exim) on a new client's box. They use Debian, a distro with which I am not familiar.

I would like, if at all possible, to keep existing configuration files intact. Debian Unleashed is somewhat cryptic about how all this may be accomplished.

The package is already in /root. Do I use dselect, dpkg, or apt, and with what options?

Any info would be appreciated.
