A trick to try if you have access to the POS is to crank up the air
conditioning. Make the room where it is as cold as it will get, take off
the case cover and put a big box fan so it blows directly into the system.
This may help salvage some operational capacity until the new POS arrives.
I had a box that was getting flakey just like yours and massive air flow
slowed down the crashes.

If your box had been trojaned, top and ps were probably replaced so the
intruders processes would be overlooked.

Oh, yeah. Try reseating all the memory modules and the cpu. Gold contacts
won't corrode, but airborne gunk can film over contacts and cause
intermittent problems.
