[ale] XFree 4.1/Mesa

I have an S3virge DX.

i have two problems but the GL support is the more critical.
the best mode for my monitor/card combination is 16 bit, 1152x864.
with Xfree 4.0.1 and also 4.1 it skips that mode and drops down to 1024x768.
to make it work i have to manually add the mode line to the XF86Config file.

i went ahead and downloaded the latest Mesa source and compiled it.
./configure, make, make install.  warnings but no errors.
the old libs seem to be replaced but neither mops or ayam will run now.
they were running just fine with XFree 3.3.6.

I've run ldd for both mops and ayam, and they are not missing any dependencies.

i'm entirely open to suggestions.
